Slovenia

Slovenia

Etymology

Present-day Slovenia has been inhabited since prehistoric times, and there is evidence of human habitation from around 250,000 years ago. A pierced cave bear bone, dating from 43100 ± 700 BP, found in 1995 in Divje Babe cave near Cerkno, is possibly the oldest musical instrument discovered in the world. In the 1920s and 1930s, artifacts belonging to the Cro-Magnon such as pierced bones, bone points, and needle were found by archaeologist Srečko Brodar in Potok Cave. [wikipedia]

Free Things to Do

Free Things to Do

Exploring Ljubljana city by foot – for a capital city, it was REALLY clean! It’s a really charming little gem of a town with a great deal of culture, very easily accessible by foot. [solo way farer]

Running around Lake Bled – as I had already packed my running shoes and exercise kit for some organised hiking I was planning to do, I threw in my Garmin GPS watch as well and decided that running by Lake Bled was too good of an opportunity to miss. It was ruddy hot, but so worth it! One loop around the lake comes up to around 5.5KM. [solo way farer]

Swimming in Lake Bled – not content with just running around it, immediately following my run, I headed back to the hotel, changed into swimwear and headed lakeside once again. This was my first time swimming in a lake and I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t a little freaked out! The hot weather and the clear, clean water made a jump into the cold lake difficult to resist however, and I can imagine it being a glorious spot for experienced open-water swimmers. [solo way farer]

Visiting the Postojna Cave – a cave system over 20KM long, this is the second longest cave system in the country. Less than 5KM are open to public. The caves are filled with absolutely ginormous stalactites and stalagmites – it really was quite awe-inspiring. [solo way farer]

Walking across all the bridges in Ljubljana – seriously for a city so small, there sure are a hell lot of interesting bridges! Here are a few of the more famous ones. [solo way farer]

Festivals

Festivals

BUMfest International Percussion Festival – As the name implies, the BUMfest International Percussion Festival is a rather specialised music festival. Taking place in Žalec and established in 2007, it is quite successful and regularly sold out. Its musical programme presents all sorts of percussion and drumming projects that often feature elements of theatre, dance, humour and sound experimentation. [skica]

Džjezz Festival – The Džjezz Festival was launched in 2009 in Celje by the then newly opened House of Culture Celje. Built on the legacy of the regular jazz concerts that the city of Celje had been hosting until then (and, now under the name Džjezz do it in Art kino Metropol Celje, still is), the festival is meant to broaden the scope of musical concerts in Celje and to facilitate further creative developments in the region. While the core concerts of the festival currently take place in the so-called Lapidarium at the bank of the Savinja River, that space is only temporary, as the location of the festival and its additional programme changes regularly. [skica]

HISTeRIA Festival – Though formally established and first held in 2011, HISTeRIA Festival actually dates back to 2003, when the musician, puppeteer, activist, actor, and director Matija Solce started organising the Etno Histria workshops. They were set up as international meetings of musicians and were held on the outskirts of the Istrian (hence Histria, an old name for Istria) village Gračišče. With time, the concept has grown, the workshop being also held in other countries, and it has gradually involved more and more people. [skica]

In Memoriam Prof. Peter Hafner Festival – The In Memoriam Prof. Peter Hafner Festival was first organised under this name in 2009, as a successor of sorts to the “Alter-Fest” that first appeared in 2005 at the Rdeča ostriga Club. In the beginning, Alter-Fest took place for only one evening and its line-up more or less consisted of punk bands. In the years to come, the festival widened its musical scope, forming a more varied and well-recognised programme. This development was partly due to the guidance of and help from Peter Hafner, a local music enthusiast, DJ, cultural activist, and mathematics professor, who unfortunately passed away in 2009. Thus, Alter-Fest got a new name. [skica]

Krastival Open Air Festival – Krastival Open Air Festival has taken place in the town of Komen, in the Kras region near the Slovenian-Italian border, since 2006. It is a relatively small but persistent international music festival that always brings to its stage a numerous and varied host of punk, hardcore, metal and crust-oriented bands. It usually lasts two days and besides live concerts offers free camping, music stalls, performances and a genuinely friendly atmosphere. The festival’s name is a word-play on the region of Karst (Kras in Slovenian) and crust punk music. [skica]

Pisana Loka Festival – Pisana Loka is a local summer festival taking place at various locations in Škofja Loka in August. At first a rather modest endeavour, it began in 2008 and has since grown into an annual event of ten packed days, encompassing music, theatre, urban sports, stand-up comedy, a children’s programme, film screenings and more. The name of the festival means “Colourful Loka”, a bit of an archaic way of calling Škofja Loka when alluding to the charms of the town. [skica]

SubArt Festival – SubArt Festival was launched in 2009 in Kranj and is nowadays one of the premier summer festivals in town, presenting various alternative musical acts, movie screenings, photography exhibitions, theatre shows, and street performances. Taking place at different locations (Layer House, Trainstation Squat, Rock Bar Down Town and the city streets), this week-long festival enlivens the long days of summer in Kranj. [skica]
