Amsterdam City Archives – Delve into the city’s rich history. The Amsterdam Treasures collection (fittingly located in the basement Treasury of the building) is free to visit and features a host of fascinating items drawn from the archives. [amsterdam tourist.info]

Begijnhof – The Begijnhof is the ideal place to visit for an escape from the noise of the city. To explore this secret courtyard find the heavy wooden door in Amsterdam’s busy centre (entrance on Spui), push it open, and an oasis of 14th-century houses and gardens appears, along with two churches. Bridge of 15 Bridges – Just one bridge in the Amsterdam canal belt gives a view of no less than 15 bridges. This unusual sight is found at the crossing of the Reguliersgracht and the Herengracht. Standing on this bridge with your back to the Thorbeckeplein, you will see six arched bridges in a row. [amsterdam tourist.info]

Canal Belt – In august 2010 the Amsterdam Canal belt was added as a UNESCO World Heritage site. The canal belt (Grachtengordel) was built in the 17th century around the old city center. [amsterdam tourist.info]

Cat Boat (Poezenboot) – If you are a cat lover then you should make a visit to the ‘poezenboot’, a sanctuary for cats on an Amsterdam houseboat. Entrance is free although donations are welcome. [amsterdam tourist.info]

Civic Guard Gallery – Hidden away, right in the city center of Amsterdam is a small glass-roofed walkway that exhibits 15 huge paintings from the 17th century. [amsterdam tourist.info]

Free Classical Lunch Concert: Concertgebouw on Wednesdays – On Wednesday from mid-September through to June you can go for a free concert in the Concertgebouw on Museum Square. Bus – Amsterdam’s bus network is extensive, connecting all neighbourhoods with other city areas and extending outwards into the Amsterdam Metropolitan Area. For example, visitors heading to the flower strip in spring, towards the beaches of Zandvoort and Bloemendaal and to the main historic towns and villages north of Amsterdam can often get around easiest by bus. [i amsterdam]

Hire a bike – Cycling is a fun, efficient and easy way of getting around Amsterdam – just like the locals do! Even if you only pedal around for a few hours, riding a bike is an essential Amsterdam experience. [i amsterdam]

Ferries across the IJ – Amsterdam’s ferries provide essential, free connections across the River IJ for pedestrians, cyclists and mopeds. Many of these blue-and-white ferries can be found directly behind Amsterdam Central Station, providing a frequent and free service across the water to and from Amsterdam Noord. [i amsterdam]

Metro – Amsterdam’s metro system radiates from Central Station to the city’s outlying districts. Its four routes are often the fastest way to reach districts like Bijlmer, Amstelveen and Diemen. [i amsterdam]

Trams – Amsterdam’s trams are suitably distinctive, decked out in blue and white and armed with a famous bell that rings out to attract the attention of any pedestrians and cyclists in the vicinity.
